Research areas at the PTC
Molecular mass / mobility spectrometry
The methodical investigation of the processes taking place in mass spectrometers has always been a research focus of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry in Wuppertal.
Among other things, research focuses on the investigation of ionization methods and the dynamics and mobility of reactive ions. The practical research is supported by numerical calculations and simulations.

Atmospheric chemistry
Atmospheric chemical processes are of great importance for life on earth, as they have a decisive influence on the quality of air and life.
Important instruments of atmospheric chemistry in Wuppertal are laboratory studies, field studies and method development as well as their links.

Plasma research
Alongside gases, liquids and solids, plasmas represent the 4th state of matter. They make up more than 99.9 % of visible matter.
In plasmas, the electrons are not firmly bound to their atomic shells, which makes them highly reactive and suitable for use as ion sources.
Our group develops plasma sources for use in mass spectrometers and conducts basic research in the characterization of plasmas, for example in the form of VUV or NIR spectroscopy.
